Summer does more damage
than most parents realize
TWO MONTHS GONE
Every June, kids walk out of school with skills they spent a year building. Every August, many of them walk back in having lost two months of it. The research calls it summer slide. Teachers see it on day one.

2 months
Average learning loss over the summer for students without structured practice
3x more
Low-income students lose three times more math progress than peers with summer support
6 weeks
Estimated time teachers spend re-teaching lost content in the fall before moving forward
Mastery-based learning
produces measurable results.
RESULTS, NOT PROMISES

The summer slide is not inevitable. It is what happens in the absence of the right kind of instruction. Mastery-based learning with direct expert guidance closes gaps faster than any app, workbook, or passive enrichment program.
What actually works: A meta-analysis of summer learning programs published by RAND found that students in high-quality structured programs gained two to three months of learning. The key variables were direct instruction from a qualified teacher, content matched to the student's actual level, & consistent daily engagement. Generic programs without those three elements produced little to no measurable gains.
Mastery-based acceleration Students who reach mastery before moving forward retain skills at significantly higher rates. A study from the University of Chicago found that mastery-based learners outperformed their peers by 28 percent on retention tests six months later. The method removes the guesswork. Every skill is built on a solid foundation before the next one begins.
Expert instruction multiplies results Hattie's Visible Learning synthesis of over 800 meta-analyses found that direct instruction from a skilled teacher has one of the highest effect sizes of any educational intervention at 0.60. That is nearly double the average effect of most school-based interventions. An expert who knows where your child is and teaches directly to that gap produces results no algorithm can replicate.
School never taught your kid how to actually live
